Practicing being in the present, “the eternal now,” is one way to cope with all the upheaval we’re currently experiencing. Here is an explanation of why this is helpful:

“Only the present, the ‘eternal now’ is real, consequently, the moment we think of the past or future, we are not grounded in the Real. But because we spend so much of our mental time on the past and the future, they become our main realities. The present seems to be here only for us to worry about the past and project into the future. But in meditation, we reverse that, as we reverse everything. In meditation, we make the present moment the reality and try not to let the past or the future draw us out. Unfortunately, they do, but we struggle against them and gradually we succeed in being in the present moment. If we could succeed in living in the present all the time, we wouldn’t need any other discipline; this alone would be enough.”
